Description Jared B. 2012-03-18 08:48:11 UTC
I just upgraded to libreoffice 3.5.1.2, and the quickstarter feature is (once again) broken. I know the feature is extremely fragile (though I truly fail to understand why...), but I'm pretty sure I have the right combination of USE flags to make it work. You can see my environment details below.

Can anyone else replicate this? The key thing previously has been to enable gtk and disable the kde USE flags. This has worked in 3.3 and 3.4, but apparently not in 3.5. Could be missing something else, but I don't know what.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'll also be happy to provide any additional info.

Hmm, I myself never ran the quickstarter (is it really this speed update nowdays).

Even if I enable that useflag it really does not work. I am tempted to just kill the useflag unless there is real showcase of some gain (eg lauch 2 mins vs 1 min).
Comment 2 Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-04-06 10:58:40 UTC
Well lets disable the feature for now and see if someone is really interested in it and willing to fix it upstream.

+ libreoffice-3.5.9999.ebuild, libreoffice-9999-r2.ebuild:
+ Disable quickstarter feature as it is broken yet again. Wrt bug#408685. If
+ anyone wants this feature contact upstream about rewritting it properly.

Has it been reported upstream? I personally still like, and would prefer to use, the feature. It's still quicker (though, admittedly, not by as much as it used to be), gets rid of the damn splash screen, and hey - I have 8 GB of RAM in my desktop. I want to populate that with something. :-)

Have you tried e4rat? That preloaders makes a great job and it preloads libreoffice on one of my maintained machines with really great results ;)

It is broken and all upstream devs agree that it is broken by design.

You can also hide the splashscreen yourself:

/usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/sofficerc
Logo=0

If you want to open bug in the freedesktop bugzilla nothing will stop you, just don't expect to get much developers attention, as I said, we more need someone fixing it rather just reporting and stating that current situation is fubared :)
Comment 6 Jared B. 2012-04-06 18:14:37 UTC
Are you an upstream dev on libreoffice? Just want to clarify; if so, didn't realize you were. I'm cool with this being considered an upstream problem, just want to make sure upstream is aware of it. :-)

I've recently become aware of the sofficerc (due to a different bug report about that recently), but I don't think that's a great solution for something like this. Even though it's technically a config file, it's not a 'proper' config file in terms of expected filesystem hierarchy, and, without additional work, it'll be overwritten on each upgrade.

I think having the option is a great idea, but I don't think the execution is very good. If you are an upstream dev, perhaps you could push for one of the following?

* Make it a per-user option. Adding a UI element would be great, but even allowing for something like copying the file to ~/.config/libreoffice/sofficerc, and having that override the system sofficerc, would be useful.

* Officially more the config file(s) to /etc, rather than requiring all of the hacks that Debian (and others?) have to do to make this work correctly.

Just some thoughts...

Also, Pacho, I've not heard of that, but it sounds interesting. Will check it out. Thanks for the tip.

Yep I happen to be SUSE QA Engeneer,

For the sofficerc yes we are aware of the issue and I even opened bug upstream to get somebody working on it.

Problem with this kind of features is that it is mostly not desired by big companies so we are not working on these but rather fixing mostly critical bugs. So the small light-lifting thingies remain for comunity to handle.

Well in theory I could write this stuff but I like to work on other areas in Gentoo during my free time :)
