vlc2 fails to compile during the configuration step when it searches for libncursesw, which is not found. This library is created by sys-libs/ncurses only if the unicode USE flag is enabled.

Unless there's a way to compile VLC2 without unicode/widechar support, it seems the proper way to fix this is to change this ebuild line:
 ncurses? ( sys-libs/ncurses )
to:
 ncurses? ( sys-libs/ncurses[unicode] )
