I'm installed sys-libs/glibc-2.13-r4, sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.2.1-r2, app-emulation/xen-4.1.1-r2. When booting dom0, I see kernel panic. The hypervisor loads, the kernel of dom0 boots. At loading, there is a kernel panic. I attached a screenshot of the error. After the panic, the computer reboots. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Xen. 2. Boot Xen Dom0. Actual Results: Kernel panic. Expected Results: Xen Dom0 should boot. GigaByte GA-970A-UD3 AMD FX-4100

I was wrong. For gcc-4.5.3 I used -march=native.
Same Problem here, using GCC 4.5.3 with CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe" on a Core i7-2600. Using CFLAGS="-march=core2 -mtune=generic -O2 -pipe" and emerge -eav world seems to fix this problem. Maybe it's a problem with -mavx in glibc? There are some bugreports in Fedora or Debian...
in my case an engineer removed --march completely and recompiled world - this helped to remove that invalid instruction error. we left with: CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe" CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" works.
hmmmm; CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe" cause it to kernel panic Using CFLAGS="-march=core2 -mtune=generic -O2 -pipe" which matches what mine was with the previous cpu, and it boots. only. it wasn't -march=core2, it was -march=native, which also matches my current build and status in make.conf. If add "init=/bin/bash" to grub then it boots which is not changing the CFLAFS in /etc/make.conf Some commands like "uname" works. But if I press Tab button for completing command, I have kernel panic. Not good. This is common; 3.2.1-gentoo-r2 . How about emerging an earlier kernel, 2.6.39 or 3.0.0 and booting on that. Chances are you who have posted have used xen well before kernel 3.2.1. I never had any such problems on the xen kernels or kernel 3.0.0

I > never had any such problems on the xen kernels or kernel 3.0.0 With gentoo-sources-3.0.17-r2 i had the same issue. maybe it's something like #352495. Didn't tried this, my machine was remote and now ready for serving services ;)
I have not tried other kernels. Unfortunately, I can not try anything now. I was install XenServer.
I' ve hit this same issue with xen-4.1.2 and hardened-sources-3.4.2-r1. BTW, if it's at all possible to change the title, it should really include the actual problem, i.e. init trapping on an invalid opcode... This seems to be an issue with glibc specific to SandyBridge machines, at least that's what I gather from the rather lengthy thread at Fedora's bug-tracker: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=801650 I've tried the latest glibc-2.15-r2 in the tree, but I get the same issue (at least when compiled with gcc-4.5.x; I'm recompiling with gcc-4.6.3, but I'd expect the results to be similar, unless gentoo's glibc includes a fix similar to the patch used by Fedora [and -apparently- Arch]).
OK. Now I have also tried glibc-2.16.0 with vanilla gcc-4.6.3, and glibc-2.14.1-r3 with hardened gcc-4.5.3 (in addition to what has been reported before), and they all break the same way (i.e. with an invalide opcode in init). This is with a 'make.conf' that has '-march=native' in CFLAGS!! I'm guessing that the funky behaviour when using bash instead of init just depends on whether or not a particular command happens to hit on an optimized, but invalid instruction... In any case, I can also confirm that building without an '-march' option results in a (possibly less optimized, but) working dom0... So, until a fix to this glibc issue is included in the ebuilds, that's one way to get up and running...
*** Bug 431380 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
going to assume this is fixed in glibc-2.15-r3
Well... that would depend on your definition of "fixed". I did get a working system after having rebuilt everything with adding only '-mtune=generic' to the "standard" CFLAGS. This encouraged me to try swapping the above to '-march=native' and rebuilding everything again only to find that the original problem remains. I'd call this a partial fix only...
(In reply to comment #24) i have reports of people doing -march=native + glibc-2.15-r3 working with xen on recent intel cpus (w/avx). that's what i call "fixed".
That's great *for them*. Unfortunately, my box still breaks with -march=native. Do you happen to have info on the rest of their toolchain? I am still seeing this issue on my i7-3517 with glibc 2.16.0 and gcc 4.6.3. Recompiling my system with march=generic isn't really acceptable especially on a laptop. This has been resolved in other distros: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=801650 https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/27828 I may have to tear into those to see if I can find the specific patch or whatever because I really could use a Windows VM on my laptop right now.
