Its been in the tree for 7 weeks, and it fixes several issues wrt previous stable version.

@blueness, missing rdepend:

sys-apps/util-linux-2.19.1-r1
sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5-r2

and please remove unneded .la file:
/usr/lib64/libxapian.la

err. only zlib, util-linux is in @system

archtester xapian # eix sys-libs/zlib
---------------------------------
Installed versions:  1.2.5-r2

archtester xapian # ebuild xapian-1.2.8.ebuild merge
>>> Original instance of package unmerged safely.
>>> dev-libs/xapian-1.2.8 merged.

survived the test suite.
archtester xapian # ebuild xapian-1.2.8.ebuild install
removing executable bit: usr/lib64/libxapian.la

There is a file usr/lib64/libxapian.la; but it's not evident why it's 'not needed'.  Anyway your call.

It is needed for xapian-binding.  I tried removing it already.

Added the following:

    DEPEND="sys-libs/zlib"
    RDEPEND="${DEPEND}"
