squashfs-tools >= 4.1 adds support for various compression other than gz.
Most notably, LZMA/XZ that allows much better compression ratios.

So please stabilize.

I have fixed bug #400939 mid stabilisation but the changes are optical only - a change from IUSE=lzma to IUSE=xz, just to properly name the type of compression.
