Description Charo del Genio 2012-01-01 18:02:25 UTC
With kernel version 3.1.6 suspend to RAM and suspend to disk are broken.
If I suspend to RAM, the computer correctly goes to sleep, but becomes completely unresponsive upon resume (black screen, backlight off, all peripherals without power). Instead, if I try to suspend to disk, the hibernation does not even complete and the computer hangs, although I can switch to the text console with ALT+F1 and see the error messages there.

The vanilla kernel 3.1.6 exhibits the exact same bug. I tested the various vanilla versions, and found that the bug was introduced in the version 3.1.5. In particular, the problem seems to have been introduced by the commit aeed6baa702a285cf03b7dc4182ffc1a7f4e4ed6 (clockevents: Set noop handler in clockevents_exchange_device). In fact, reverting this commit in the gentoo-sources completely fixes the bug, and the computer works as it should, that is, both suspend modes function properly, with the computer correctly resuming.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Compile kernel
2. Suspend to RAM or to disk with whatever preferred method
Actual Results:
Computer fails to resume from suspend to RAM, or never terminates suspend to disk.

Expected Results:
Computer should correctly resume from suspend to RAM, or complete the suspend to disk (and correctly resume afterwards).

Output from emerge --info follows

works here on amd64
Comment 2 Charo del Genio 2012-01-02 10:49:14 UTC
It might be due to interactions with other kernel options or hardware components of the system. For instance, in previous versions of the kernel there were problems related to MSI only when not using KMS. Thus, it might be something of the sort in this case too. Config can be found at http://pastebin.com/2b7NPMc0 so weird interactions can be checked if needed. System is Dell laptop Studio 17, with Intel Core i7 Q 820, video card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650, wireless card Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY, multicard reader O2 Micro, and ethernet card Realtek RTL8111/8168B.

Does the workaround fix the problem in your case too?
Comment 5 Stratos Psomadakis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-01-03 20:37:51 UTC
Thanks for the report. The regression is fixed (by reverting the guilty commit) in the new stable/longterm kernels (released today).

I just bumped vanilla-sources, and released genpatches with the fix, so gentoo-sources will be getting an update soon too.
