I get the same (confirming).
This is related to plplot. The last update to 5.9.9 from 5.9.7-r1 introduces this issue, as plplot devs decided to change API between patchlevel upgrades. The same goes for sci-satronomy/scamp, which will probably also get an entry in the bugtracker, I guess.
I'm currently working on a patch fixing this issue. It seems to compile fine, but I'll give it a test before posting...
Here's the analysis: plplot-5.9.9 introcuces a new member function to their plstream class, which is called "string". (Un)fortunately this is also standard c++ , using namespace std, which gdl is doing. But as the class GDLGStream inherits from plstream, gdl uses the plplot version instead of the std c++ one. The fix is easy and straight forward, and should not effect any installation having plplot<5.9.9. The second thing I stumbled upon is probably more problematic: plstream::SetOpt is declared deprecated for 5.9.9 and *whohoo* not even included anymor in the distribution. I changed the call to setopt instead of SetOpt, but this might have side isuues I'm not aware of yet, so probably someone should have a look at it. Anyway, with the patch, the sources compiles and starts, some minor tests were made and worked, so I guess, I can push the patch to the wild... (It'll take some more minutes to generate it, so be patient. :) ) Best regards Jan
