I had the same problem, it was solved by the new portage (2.0.50_pre20). Ben
I think this bug can be closed.
I find it irritating, that bash-2.05b# etcat -v libxml2 prints the output: [ Results for search key : libxml2 ] [ Candidate applications found : 4 ] Only printing found installed programs. * dev-libs/libxml2 : [ ] 2.6.6 (2) [ ] 2.6.7 (2) [M~ ] 2.6.9 (2) [ ] 2.6.11 (2) while bash-2.05b# emerge search libxml2 Searching... I have been told before, that this is the problem, when the corresponding ebuild is missing after an "emerge sync" operation. So is this a bug or feature? I find it irritating, that two portage tools differ in their output. I think "etcat -v libxml2" should atleast print, that "libxml2 2.6.4" is installed on my system.
