OK, maybe I didn't typed it clearly enough the first time: ...the relevant *config.log*...
Created attachment 287357 [details] config.log Not needed anyway here it is. The problem was libtool related, re-emerging sys-devel/libtool-2.4-r1 fixed the compile failure.
I can make a pretty good guess - you've removed libltdl.la file - that's one of the few you should leave alone (those for imagemagick modules are another alike set).
but then please make sure libtool has been built with USE=static-libs as latest revision doesn't install .la files anymore without USE=static-libs
should be all set now in the tree; thanks for the report! why fix this by restoring the .la file? I found this fix in the forums, and it seems to fix the problem nicely in the imagemacgick ebuild: add next line to src_prepare() in ebuild sed 's/with_ltdl_lib\/libltdl.la/with_ltdl_lib\/libltdl.so/g' -i configure
