Created attachment 287105 [details] Python exception backtrace, and bzr self-diagnosis
marienz found an upstream bug report (see also). bzr-2.2 is not being supported on python-2.7. If you have python-2.6 installed, you can try using running "bzr-2.6 branch ..." to work around this. Alternatively, you can upgrade to 2.4.1.
I'll file a stabilization request for bzr 2.4.1, then.
This is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bzr/+bug/693880 . Relevant comment: > Really, anyone who wants to use Python 2.7 with Bazaar should be on at least > 2.3 as this was just one of a number of incompatibilities that were fixed on > trunk but not backported. This specific issue is fixed in bzr 2.2.3. Upgrading the bzr 2.2.x in portage to the latest available upstream (2.2.5) would fix this specific issue, but given the comment quoted above it might still be wise to restrict bzr 2.2 to python < 2.7. Getting bzr 2.4 stable would help, but it might be a little early for that. Also, bzr 2.4 drops support for python < 2.6, which might be too soon for some people. I think getting the latest bzr 2.3 stable would make the most sense, as that branch still supports both python < 2.6 and python 2.7. However the bzr 2.3 ebuild was removed from the tree when 2.4 was added. I do not know why this was done: https://launchpad.net/bzr/2.3/2.3.0 states 2.3 is a "long-term-stable series" supported "until August 2012" (not a development branch obviously superseded by 2.4). Unless upstream changed their mind on that I think it makes sense to re-add the latest bzr from the 2.3 branch and try to get that stable, then drop 2.2 from the tree.
bzr 2.4 fixes a lot of problems from upstream we had to cope with, it is the first time since 2.1 that we have a working test suite again (at least on my and some other people's system), so I regard bzr 2.3 as obsolete and 2.4 is named as a bugfix release mostly for 2.3 anyway. Stabilising 2.4 is definitely the way to go, I am moving house at the moment, so give it a week.
Please stabilise Bazaar 2.4 so we have something more recent in the stable tree. Along with that please go for: =dev-python/testtools-0.9.11 =dev-vcs/bzr-2.4.1 =dev-vcs/bzrtools-2.4.0 =dev-vcs/qbzr-0.21.1 =dev-vcs/bzr-xmloutput-0.8.7 =dev-vcs/bzr-svn-1.1.0 =dev-vcs/bzr-rewrite-0.6.2 =dev-vcs/bzr-gtk-0.100.0 =dev-vcs/bzr-git-0.6.2 =dev-vcs/bzr-explorer-1.2.1 Doing bug 381261 before is just a wishlist item.
