Description Allan Gottlieb 2011-06-23 02:38:41 UTC
As requested in the gentoo-user list I followed the instructions in http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/bugs.shtml#backtrace.

After typing run evo came up. I went to an existing appointment, right clicked, and selected open, this caused the reported crash. I then did "thread apply all bt". The terminal output is attached as an attachment.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start evo
2. right click on contact
3. select open
Actual Results:
Evo crashes

Expected Results:
Contact is opened

Terminal output when running evo and trying to open an existing appointment
Comment 2 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2011-06-23 07:29:49 UTC
Is this a regression over 2.32.2*? Your system doesn't have debugging symbols for, for example, glib. Please follow:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml

Also install bug-buddy to get the traces
Comment 3 lxg 2011-06-26 21:14:09 UTC
I have the same when starting a new appointment or meeting.

The same applies to you then ;)

Sorry for the delay.
I tried 2.32.2 for both evo and e-d-s. Evo didn't compile. However, evo 2.32.2-r3 did compile and works fine so this bug is a regression for 2.32.3.
I also noticed with 2.32.3, that creating new appointments crashes evo. But again with 2.32.3, all is well.

I will now turn to backtraces.xml. I will add -ggdb to make.conf (CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS)and remerge glib, evo, and e-d-s (the latter two back to 2.32.3).

> Also install bug-buddy to get the traces

bug-buddy is installed (has been for a long while).

I might be doing something wrong since gdb asserts that I still don't have symbols.

Please add splitdebug to FEATURES. Otherwise, portage will automatically strip debugging information from binaries. See http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml for more details.

That helped. Evolution now has symbols and bug-buddy does pop up.
But it says that not information could be collected. evo e-d-s and glib were compiled with -ggdb and splitdebug

In my system I append "-ggdb" to CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS and use "FEATURES=debug splitdebug"

I have -ggdb and have the splitdebug FEATURE. When I tried the debug
FEATURE, I received

ajglap gottlieb # emerge -1 evolution evolution-data-server glib
FEATURES variable contains unknown value(s): debug

Also the debugging guide you pointed me at (backtraces.xml) doesn't mention this as a FEATURE.

This looks really strange to me

For now, I have seen the problem looks to be in evolution-data-server, but still need to check compiling it with or without some patches (it takes some time to compile on my system)
Comment 13 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2011-06-28 18:33:10 UTC
The problem is caused by 009* patch, as 010* relies on 009* being applied, you can workaround this for now removing both at src_prepare phase:

        # Apply multiple backports and fixed from master and 2.32 branches
        rm "${WORKDIR}/${P}-patches"/009*.patch
        rm "${WORKDIR}/${P}-patches"/010*.patch
        epatch "${WORKDIR}/${P}-patches"/*.patch

I have asked upstream about this issue:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649787#c10

But, as my programming knowledge is very limited, I would like any help with this to fix the problem without reverting both.

Running evolution-data-server-2.32.3 it's fully reproducible. Removing two patches as described above solves the problem. This problem discussed as well here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=653216

Thanks Pacho. For the same reason, patch006 should be removed from
gnome-panel-2.32.1-r2 because the panel calendar-applet opens the
evolution calendar on the wrong date.

I thinks it's because patch006 is intended for a newer version of
evolution (I'm running 2.32.3). The calendar-applet hands the
date to evolution in the new format:

evolution calendar:///?startdate=20110715

instead of the older format needed by evolution 2.32.3:
evolution calendar:///?startdate=20110715T070000Z

Removing the patch fixes the problem for me.

But does gnome-panel fail when all e-d-s patches are used? (even causing the problem reported here?) (I have always had problems about how to use that panel feature :S)
Comment 17 walt 2011-07-12 20:46:37 UTC
I'm not sure what you mean by "fail".

Double-clicking on July 15 in the calendar-applet (see my
example above) opens the evolution calendar on June 15
instead of July 15.

This is a very old bug re-introduced by patch006 for
gnome-panel (because of the incorrect date format).

The evolution crashing bug is a completely separate bug
from the calendar-applet bug. I hope I didn't confuse
you by posting about it here (but since I knew you would
see it here... ;)

I didn't open a new bug about calendar-applet because
there is already a bug report that was fixed/closed long
ago.

Please open then a new bug report with exact steps to let me try to reproduce and to remember to solve that issue also ;)

Thanks
