I'm starting to wonder if we need to depend on a later glibc version.
(In reply to comment #14) > I'm starting to wonder if we need to depend on a later glibc version. Is there a glibc version you would like me to try? I assume I can downgrade it with a binpkg after testing.
No, once you upgrade glibc you are stuck with that version.
Would someone be willing to test glibc-2.12.2?
(In reply to comment #17) > Would someone be willing to test glibc-2.12.2? It works for me with glibc-2.12.2.
Same here, works with USE=vanilla. (In reply to comment #14) > I'm starting to wonder if we need to depend on a later glibc version. Shouldn't gcc be able to work with any glibc version? Or apply the breaking patch only when recent enough glibc is detected? if USE=vanilla is working, then it'd be useful to narrow down which patch is causing the problem
could be that with USE=vanilla we don't default to -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2. glibc-2.11.3 lacks this patch: http://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=commit;h=42acbb92c861e97a6e1293ea853db88342a1bf53
(In reply to comment #21) > could be that with USE=vanilla we don't default to -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2. Indeed: It works here to remove this line from gcc/gcc.c after unpacking without USE=vanilla: @@ - %{!U_FORTIFY_SOURCE:%{!D_FORTIFY_SOURCE:%{!D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=*:-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2}}}\
i wonder if that makes this a dupe of Bug 363043
(In reply to comment #23) > i wonder if that makes this a dupe of Bug 363043 Yep, dropping the FORTIFY_SOURCE line from gcc/gcc.c does help there too.

i'm going to implement my suggestion from earlier -- if the host glibc is older than 2.12, warn and disable the fortify patch. i don't think trying to get people to upgrade their broken glibc first, then upgrade gcc, then upgrade glibc again will work.
