the file I got from http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/redis-2.2.2.tar.gz is only 20k, while the real one on http://redis.googlecode.com/files/redis-2.2.2.tar.gz is more like 500k

Thanks for the report. The Manifest file matches which means the mirror system is doing its job and the maintainer needs to look at the issue

We should move away redis -> pyredis and contact upstream not to clash...

I've moved the distfiles tarball to redis-py to prevent this from happening and opened https://github.com/andymccurdy/redis-py/issues/123 to get it renamed upstream.
