Description Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2011-03-14 15:00:11 UTC
See tracker bug 350792.

virtual/modutils
   packages:
      sys-apps/module-init-tools
      sys-apps/modutils

Please convert to a new-style virtual.

Note: The virtual is used as a blocker, but with only two providers this shouldn't be a problem.
Comment 1 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2011-04-09 15:50:40 UTC
Another easy case. I'll convert it to a new-style virtual in one week from now, unless there are objections.
Comment 2 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2011-04-12 05:59:53 UTC
OTOH, both openrc and baselayout-1* depend on module-init-tools, which blocks against modutils.

Maybe the virtual should be removed entirely?
Comment 3 Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2011-04-20 13:20:47 UTC
Could someone from base-system please comment on the status/usefulness of sys-apps/modutils?

- Looks like the package cannot be installed without some tricks (like
package.providing module-init-tools, because baselayout depends on it
  since 2006).
- Users of kernel 2.4 could use module-init-tools-3.5 or -3.6-r1.

No reply from maintainers.
I've removed the virtual now.

All sorts of things are breaking now on my system trying to upgrade. Like thousands of ebuilds. Not sure if it's because it's Paludis. I look forward to this problem going away. I'm sure it will, someday.
