dev-lang/perl:ithreads - Enable Perl threads, has some compatibility problems
sys-devel/libperl:ithreads - Enable Perl threads, has some compatibility problems

CC'ing perl, as the USE flag descriptions may need changes into something less subtle.
Comment 2 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-11-01 09:55:36 UTC
Not Linux-PAM problem.
Comment 3 Torsten Veller (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-11-02 08:09:34 UTC
@Muelli: until this gets addressed, rebuild automake with your current perl.
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2010-11-10 09:47:01 UTC
sounds like a perl problem. automake works fine for me and pretty much everyone else with USE=-ithreads. perhaps your hardened + -fomit-frame-pointer -g -ggdb stuff is screwing things up.

post the full build log of your perl with USE=-ithreads as an attachment.
Comment 5 Torsten Veller (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-11-10 10:02:50 UTC
/usr/share/automake-1.11/Automake/Config.pm records the build time status of perl's ithreads support in "our $perl_threads = 1;".
So if you toggle from USE=threads to USE=-threads it fails when it starts to load threads in /usr/share/automake-1.11/Automake/ChannelDefs.pm.
Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2010-11-10 10:22:14 UTC
so things fail if you:
 1. USE=ithreads emerge perl
 2. emerge automake
 3. USE=-ithreads emerge perl
 4. run `automake`

not sure there is much we can do about this
Comment 7 Matt Turner gentoo-dev 2010-12-26 02:51:49 UTC
I just hit this, and I'd imagine this is how it happened.

Since we don't have existing MIPS/N32 stages, I tarred up my existing installation to use as a seed stage, which includes perl compiled with USE="ithreads". I guess automake was compiled against perl (USE="ithreads") during stage 1. During stage3 perl gets recompiled without USE="ithreads", which causes subsequent uses of automake fail (compilation of libtool-2.4-r1 in my case).

I still don't understand: Why does upstream record the ithreads support at build-time and does not check at runtime?
Comment 16 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2013-01-14 17:36:02 UTC
upstream has taken my patch. i've added it to automake-1.13 for now. if no one complains, we can backport it to 1.11.x and 1.12.x.
