Correction: The program causing this seems to be gcc-config, not the gcc ebuild itself. In try_real_hard_to_find_CHOST() it runs sed on conf=${ROOT}/etc/make.conf. Instead it should probably look for /etc/portage/make.conf, if that does not exist fall back to /etc/make.conf, and if that's also missing abort with an error. (The test should be added before the ret=$(source "${conf}" 2>/dev/null ; echo ${!varname}) line.)
