With USE="-emacs" and /usr/bin/emacs symlinked to zile, configure will hang:

checking dependency style of x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... gcc3
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... (cached) yes
checking for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-ranlib... x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-ranlib
checking for emacs... emacs
checking where .elc files should go...
