After updating to avahi-0.6.27 all clients (avahi-browse,vinagre,nautilus) fail to connect to the avahi daemon. The daemon is indeed running. Ex: avahi-browse -avt Outputs: "Failed to create client object: Daemon not running" As far as I can tell this might be due to some changes in the avahi-client lib to deal with auto avahi daemons (i.e. systemd). The only work around I can offer now is to install an org.freedesktop.Avahi.service file in /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/ even though this is really intended for use with systemd. I don't believe this is the right solution, but it does fix my clients. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge =avahi-0.6.27 2. /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start 3. avahi-browse -avt Actual Results: Failed to create client object: Daemon not running Portage 2.2_rc67 (default/linux/amd64/10.0, gcc-4.5.0, glibc-2.11.2-r0, 2.6.34-zen1 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.34-zen1-x86_64-Intel-R-_Core-TM-2_Duo_CPU_P8600_@_2.40GHz-with-gentoo-2.0.1 Timestamp of tree: Tue, 03 Aug 2010 23:15:01 +0000 distcc 3.1 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu [enabled] ccache version 2.4 [disabled] app-shells/bash: 4.1_p7 dev-java/java-config: 2.1.11 dev-lang/python: 2.6.5-r3, 3.1.2-r4 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r8 dev-util/cmake: 2.8.1-r2 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.1 sys-apps/openrc: 0.6.1-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 2.2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.65-r1 sys-devel/automake: 1.9.6-r3, 1.10.3, 1.11.1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.20.1-r1 sys-devel/gcc: 4.4.4-r1, 4.5.0 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.1 sys-devel/libtool: 2.2.10 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.34 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" ACCEPT_LICENSE="*" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=core2 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/share/X11/xkb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/sandbox.d /etc/splash /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=core2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/src/distfiles" FEATURES="assume-digests distcc distlocks fixpackages news parallel-fetch preserve-libs protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-logs unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo ftp://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo" LANG="en_US.utf8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed" LINGUAS="en en_US" MAKEOPTS="-j8" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/var/lib/layman/gnome /usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://toserv/gentoo-portage" USE="X alsa amd64 avahi bash-completion berkdb bluetooth bzip2 cairo cli cracklib crypt cups cxx dbus dri fortran gdbm gnome gnome-keyring gpm gtk iconv jpeg libnotify mmx modules mudflap multilib ncurses nls nptl nptlonly openmp pam pcre png policykit pppd python readline reflection samba session smp spl sse sse2 ssl ssse3 svg sysfs syslog tcpd threads truetype udev unicode usb vim-syntax xcb xinetd xml xorg zeroconf zlib" ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache cgi cgid dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" CAMERAS="digita" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="en en_US" QEMU_SOFTMMU_TARGETS="i386 x86_64 ppc64 ppc arm" QEMU_USER_TARGETS="i386 ppc ppc64 ppc arm" RUBY_TARGETS="ruby18" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="intel" XTABLES_ADDONS="quota2 psd pknock lscan length2 ipv4options ipset ipp2p iface geoip fuzzy condition tee tarpit sysrq steal rawnat logmark ipmark dhcpmac delude chaos account" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LC_ALL, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS

On my system the dbus services directory is not in "/usr/share/dbus1/system-services/" but in "../dbus-1/.." (note the hypen); you might want to update the patch accordingly. On the plus side this fixes the client programs - clearly a pretty boneheaded move for a minor release..
Created attachment 241595 [details, diff] avahi-0.6.27-workaround.patch Thank you for catching my typo. Corrected and I added a reference to this bug.
Thanks, you patch works for me too
Downgrading also "works"... haven't tried the patch though. Cheers
I've reverted one commit from upstream, which should fix this issue. The real fix needs to be investigated, because the .service file should only be needed for systemd configurations.
Lennart explains this change here: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/avahi/2010-August/001907.html I don't understand enough about the interaction with dbus :/
