Makes sense, as the test file only has "#include <mysql.h>", the file has path /usr/include/mysql/mysql.h, and there is no -I switch active for the check. The old rc5 ebuild used the following logic, which seemed to work: if use mysql; then myconf+=" --with-mysql --with-mysql-includes=/usr/include/mysql --with-mysql-libs=/usr/$(get_libdir)/mysql" else myconf+=" --without-mysql" fi The new one only has this argument to configure: $(use_with mysql) \ Seeing that there are --with-*-includes directives for ffmpeg and freetype that are included regardles of whether the corresponding USE flag is present, it might be most consistent to add --with-mysql-includes and --with-mysql-libs unconditionally as well.
