Stix fonts have finally been released. 1.0 version:

The initial set of 23 OpenType fonts is now available for downloadload.

(Version 1.2, which will include Type 1 fonts for use with LaTeX, will follow in 2011.  Thus these are still missing.)

Note that there does not appear to be a non-interactive way of downloading the fonts, so the STIXv1.0.0.zip file will have to be hosted by Gentoo. You can manually download STIXv1.0.0.zip from http://www.aip.org/stixfonts/font_download.jsp by clicking through a SIL-1.1 license agreement.
