Description Igor Novgorodov 2010-05-28 12:33:39 UTC
As sys-devel/gcc-4.4.3-r2 has been marked stable, i've decided to try to rebuild world in my test box.
Evertything recompiled fine, but for coreutils:
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/crtbeginT.o: relocation R_X86_64_32 against `__DTOR_END__' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/crtbeginT.o: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

USE="acl caps gmp nls static unicode"

Reproducible: Always

Can you try with USE="-static" ?

And let me just say... You shouldn't put "static" in make.conf, the flag is not intended to be used like that, more like for specific packages you need at boot time with separate partitions, in package.use.
Comment 5 Igor Novgorodov 2010-05-29 08:30:36 UTC
Yep, it builds fine without 'static'.
I'm using USE='static' globally just in case there will be any problem with dynamic linking that will prevent me from repairing the server remotely, there were some such cases before in my practice... And because coreutils is COREutils, so that it should work in any situation :)
Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2010-05-29 20:25:46 UTC
this is why a static busybox is installed on every Gentoo system. it provides a recovery shell and a lot of network utilities to help in recovering. simply run `bb`.
Comment 7 Igor Novgorodov 2010-05-30 10:03:06 UTC
Thanks, i thought for some reason that bb can only be used after reboot, such as init=/bin/busybox or something like that, never thought of it else. Thanks!
But coreutils should be able to build statically anyway :)
Comment 8 Rick Farina (Zero_Chaos) gentoo-dev 2010-07-14 22:59:41 UTC
can't build coreutils-8.5 same error
Comment 9 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2010-07-19 20:15:22 UTC
should be worked around now in stable
