Description Richard 2010-05-01 15:23:43 UTC
The ebuild appears to react unpredictably to various choices of CFLAGS.

Reproducible: Always

Attempting to re-emerge dev-libs/icu-4.4-r1 also fails, although it had been compiled as recently as a few weeks ago without issue. I am not certain what changed to cause dev-libs/icu's compilation to fail.

A regular "emerge icu" fails. If I modify the command to be:

CFLAGS="-O3 -pipe -march=core2 -msse4.1 -mcx16 -msahf --param l1-cache-size=32 --param l1-cache-line-size=64 --param l2-cache-size=6144 -ftree-loop-linear -fgcse-sm -fgcse-las -ftree-loop-im -ftree-loop-ivcanon -fivopts -frename-registers -fweb" CXXFLAGS=${CFLAGS} CPPFLAGS=${CFLAGS} emerge icu

It will also fail. However, this is when things become interesting. "-march=core2 -msse4.1 -mcx16 -msahf --param l1-cache-size=32 --param l1-cache-line-size=64 --param l2-cache-size=6144" is roughly the equivalent of "-march=native". Substituting "-march=native" works:

CFLAGS="-O3 -pipe -march=native -ftree-loop-linear -fgcse-sm -fgcse-las -ftree-loop-im -ftree-loop-ivcanon -fivopts -frename-registers -fweb" CXXFLAGS=${CFLAGS} CPPFLAGS=${CFLAGS} emerge icu

That would seem to indicate that those flags are a problem, but if I were to leave the flags that are equivalent to "-march=native" in that command and remove the other flags, it also works:

CFLAGS="-O3 -pipe -march=core2 -msse4.1 -mcx16 -msahf --param l1-cache-size=32 --param l1-cache-line-size=64 --param l2-cache-size=6144" CXXFLAGS=${CFLAGS} CPPFLAGS=${CFLAGS} emerge icu

Emerging ICU has always been problematic on my system, so I wanted to figure out why it was failing, but I am at a loss to explain these results.

Build log from "emerge icu"

Here is a build log.
Comment 3 Andrew Savchenko gentoo-dev 2010-05-05 19:39:56 UTC
Same problem here. This is the weirdiest error I ever seen.
If fails with the following CFLAGS:
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp --param l1-cache-line-size=64 --param l1-cache-size=64 --param l2-cache-size=512 -funswitch-loops -fpredictive-commoning -fgcse-after-reload -fomit-frame-pointer -ftree-loop-linear -floop-strip-mine"

Note 1: This is minimal CFLAGS required to reproduce a problem. With *any* single flag of these above removed it compiles.
Note 2: CXXFLAGS are unaffected and defaults from make.conf were used.

Comment 4 Johannes Hirte 2010-05-05 21:41:00 UTC
Can confirm this bug. I've triggerd it with the following CFLAGS:

CFLAGS="-march=k8-sse3 -O2 -mfpmath=sse -fweb -ftracer -funswitch-loops -fpredictive-commoning -fgcse-after-reload -ftree-vectorize -fomit-frame-pointer -ftree-loop-distribution -ftree-loop-im -fvect-cost-model -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

Removing one of this flags makes icu compile fine. Exceptions are -ftracer and -pipe. They must be removed together to make icu compile. I don't have a clue what's happening there, but -pipe is related to this. And it's not a case of parallel make problem. Have tested it with MAKEOPTS="-j1".

Why is this bug assigned to php-bugs?
Comment 6 Richard 2010-05-06 00:00:58 UTC
Perhaps we should also ask why it is still marked "RESOLVED NEEDINFO". I am reopening it because apparently, I have the ability to do that as the original poster. I had hoped that one of Gentoo's developers would do this, but I am afraid that this bug will never be seen by them again should it be left this way.
Comment 7 Richard 2010-05-06 00:01:40 UTC
Someone offline was distracting me, which kept me from reopening the bug with my previous comment. This one should reopen it.
Comment 8 Jake Todd 2010-05-08 22:05:49 UTC
Try not ricing your C/XXFLAGS.

The system I have which has issues with this bug is a virtual machine that was intended to be used to find these kinds of bugs. Your suggestion is the equivalent of suggesting that no one ever do any Quality Assurance testing because trying to proactively discover bugs before less technical people encounter them is cheating.

If you want that kind of experience, I suggest you try Ubuntu.
Comment 10 Zdenek Sojka 2010-06-10 10:50:58 UTC
The problem is at pkgdata.cpp:488:

...
#define SMALL_BUFFER_MAX_SIZE 512
...
static int runCommand(const char* command, UBool specialHandling) {
    char cmd[SMALL_BUFFER_MAX_SIZE];
...
    } else {
normal_command_mode:
        sprintf(cmd, "%s", command); // line 488
    }
...

When the supplied command line ("x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -D_REENTRANT -O2 -pipe ...") is too long, buffer overflow occurs.

(I have to say, it surprises me that sprintf/strcat is used everywhere in the code, without any bounds checking)
