Since this is what install /usr/share/fonts/default/ghostscript in the tinderbox; not sure why I don't have the media-fonts/gnu-gs-fonts-std installed by the way, but I guess it would have the same problem.

it depends on urw-fonts which now (after bug 311923) blocks both -std and -other - is that not enough?

Nope it's not enough, I'm afraid; the depgraph is written so that the packages aren't removed, at least here, before ghostscript is installed… and since ghotscript dies when the path is found… would be a nice idea to just !!block it.
