When starting gdm without having gnome-session installed the screen just stays black with a mouse cursor at the center. "emerge gnome-session" fixes this and the logs also say that gdm tries to launch /usr/bin/gnome-session. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge '>gdm-2.20' && emerge -C gnome-session 2. /etc/init.d/xdm restart Actual Results: Screen is black with no chooser or greeter available. Expected Results: The greeter should show up.
I think that this was introduced on 2.23.90: =============== Version 2.23.90 =============== * A few multi-monitor fixes for the greeter * Don't load local users at all if user list is disabled * Switch to using gnome-session 2.23.6+ for simple-greeter session manager ... Also, I have seen that gdm.spec from fedora already includes it as a dep :-/
