I have '-akonadi' flag set in make.conf, because I don't want to use akonadi, and I don't have kmail or akregator installed. When emerging kde-base/plasma-workspace-4.4.0 it fails to build. Resolved with USE=-rss for plasma-workspace, so probably the 'rss' flag here should take akonadi as dependency.
Confirmed here with kde-base/plasma-workspace-4.4.1 FYI There is also a problem with klinkstatus-4.4.1, which cannot be worked around and is pulled in by kde-meta.
How about 4.4.2?

Fixed in >=4.4.2. Thanks for reporting. A few apps (libkleo, kleopatra, probably kopete) use non-akonadi kdepimlibs components. Maybe we'll need to revisit this USE flag in a future though (when people start to get used to all nepomuk heavy dependenecies... like soprano, virtuoso-*)
