This struck me, too.

I can confirm that app-misc/anki-0.9.9.8.6 (latest unstable, all anki versions are marked ~amd64) works with both dev-python/beautifulsoup-3.0.8 (latest stable) and dev-python/beautifulsoup-3.1.0.1-r1 (latest unstable).

Strange thing about beautifulsoup though, that beautifulsoup-3.1.0.1-r1 depends on beautifulsoup-3.0.8. But I hope that doesn't touch this matter

I looked at the source, and beatifulsoup gets imported unconditionally.
I'd recommend adding >=dev-python/beautifulsoup-3.0.8 to RDEPEND.

Additional Info:
I am completely on ~amd64.
