Here is a fairly trivial ebuild for mu (http://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu/), a powerful mail indexing/searching application.
The two alternatives for mail indexing with good mutt support available in Portage, mairix and nmzmail, both have their drawbacks: nmzmail is little more than a wrapper around the namazu search engine while mairix suffers heavily from the NIH syndrome and reinvents the full text searching wheel in a not very powerful albeit space-efficient way.
mu uses the Xapian search engine and is under active development.
