when it downloaded the file it started to gzip and then 

gzip unexpected end of file
tar...

then the emerge quit.

the tgz is incomplete and the md5sum is for the bad archive which are the gentoo
mirror. Downloading from ftp.openldap.org and running the ebuild digest command
seems (compile hasn't finished yet) to fix the problem.

The openldap file at the gentoo website looks like it is broken.
Should be over 1 MB in size.

I am going to mark this one as fixed, as the tarball looks ok now.
