I tested several puppet version (USE flag rrdtool) and installed dev-ruby/ruby-rrd and rrdtool with ruby use flag in several combinations but it never works as expected. Hers's the output from puppetmasterd: debug: Failed to load library 'RRDtool' for feature 'rrd' warning: RRD library is missing; cannot store metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot graph metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot store metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot graph metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot store metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot graph metrics Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. enable rrd in puppet 2. start puppetd 3. Actual Results: debug: Failed to load library 'RRDtool' for feature 'rrd' warning: RRD library is missing; cannot store metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot graph metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot store metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot graph metrics warning: RRD library is missing; cannot store metrics Expected Results: Should create RRD's

[ebuild R ] dev-ruby/ruby-rrd-1.1 0 kB Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB I traced the problem to the wrong library. Puppet requires RRDtool.so but anything except the Gem installs RRD.so. The gem needs patching to install. When i finished that Puppt can use RRD data. Currently there's no ebuild to install RRDtool.so
Thanks for reporting back your findings; assigning to maintainer who can decide what to do about missing dependency (new ebuild, or not claim rrdtool support...)
Fixed in cvs 0.25.4
The additional require line to metric.rb breaks puppetd when RRD is not available or desired: /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet/util/metric.rb:3:in `require': no such file to load -- RRD (LoadError) from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet/util/metric.rb:3 from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet/type.rb:3:in `require' from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet/type.rb:3 from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet.rb:168:in `require' from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet.rb:168 from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet/application/puppetd.rb:1:in `require' from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet/application/puppetd.rb:1 from /usr/sbin/puppetd:158:in `require' from /usr/sbin/puppetd:158 Does it make sense to wrap the patch with the rrdtool USE flag?
Its my mistake. Fixed in 0.25.4-r1.
