Description Michael Wellman 2009-10-28 10:58:43 UTC
kio_thumbnail in kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves-4.3.1 will consume all available RAM and swap if previews are turned on. On my desktop I have plasma folders. If any folder is set to show previews kio_thumbnails will fairly rapidly (maybe 5 or 10 minutes) consume all ram then start filling up swap. And the system slows to a crawl.

This will happen every time. If I use dolphin with previews on it happens too except if I shut down dolphin the system will close kio_thumbnails a bit after dolphin exits, maybe a minute or two.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Turn priviews on in a plasma folder and wait a few minutes
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Fairly quickly the system slows to a crawl do to memory shortage

Expected Results:
Show previews in my folders

Hello,
this is not exactly Gentoo bug but more of upstream issue. So if you might point your eyes to upstream bugzilla [1], they might be able to help you. Also when you create bug there, add the link on it here so we can track it.

Cheers

Adding links for tracking:

Bug 185881 - kio_thumbnail tries to create thumbnail of way to big files and eats up memory, cpu, swap https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=185881

Bug 203628 - kio_thumbnail process eats all my memory https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=203628

I would argue that this bug is not caused upstream and that this is in fact a Gentoo problem. Look at KDE bug 203628 and note that virtually all of the reporters are using Gentoo on AMD64. IMO this requires further investigation before marking it resolved upstream.

Though no real evidence, I agree. I'm using Gentoo AMD64, KDE 4.4.5 applications (yes, just applications, not the whole desktop) and the bug persists.
