dev-lang/ghc-6.8.2 hard-depends on readline-5*, see bug 259867. Adding haskell herd to CC: Any version of ghc that does not depend on readline-5* good to go stable?
ghc 6.8.2 depends on =readline-5*, yes. It's because it uses precompiled binaries to bootstrap, and those binaries uses readline-5. However, when we noticed this trouble we prepared ghc 6.8.2-r1, which has a bootstrapping binary that doesn't depend on readline at all. When it bootstraps the resulting ghc uses whatever readline the user had installed. Ultimately I'd prefer not to spend more time fixing ghc 6.8.2, and instead work on getting ghc 6.10.x working properly. Even ghc 6.12 will be released in a few weeks, so you can imagine ghc 6.8.2 is quite old. If you need something really quickly though we don't have much other choice than to stabilize ghc 6.8.2-r1, although that's currently only available for a couple arches; amd64 and x86.
we already have Bug 259867 open, but ghc problems arent going to block the stabilization process
