Description Gabriel V Lepage 2009-08-12 06:17:48 UTC
When attempting to run the application.

vncviewer

it generates:
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font
Error: Aborting: no font found

I emerged this package using the commmand
emerge -va tightvnc

kernel generated by genkernel version -> x86_64-2.6.30-gentoo-r4
Currently I also use 'hal' and the hald is running.
My make.conf file below
CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe"

VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"

There were no generated errors during compilation or installation.
No other program is generating this error.

For the moment i am using GNOME version 2.24.3

I have not found anything pertaining to this error for dmesg, although I could include that if necessary

I am frustrated by this error none of my searches have yielded an answer. Although I am relatively new to Linux and Gentoo, I am a smart guy and so far have been able to find solutions to ALL the other issues I have had to date. I need vncviewer to work.

I am not a computer novice, I program successfully for several platforms etc.

My hope is that my posting contains enough data for a resolution and that this is an appropriate posting.

I have done all the obvious things, i.e.
emerge --sync
emerge --deep --update --newuse world
emerge --depclean
revdep-rebuild
env-update
etc, etc,

Please if any additional information is needed, please let me know.
This is my first post here, do not murder me!!!!!

Sincerely,

G

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
glapglnx ~ # vncviewer
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font
Error: Aborting: no font found

Actual Results:
glapglnx ~ # vncviewer
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font
Error: Aborting: no font found

Expected Results:
vncviewer works the same as on Ubuntu, at least that is my presumption

Comment 2 Christoph Linder 2009-08-19 12:55:10 UTC
Hi,

seems like there's a missing dependency in the ebuild.

I got a workaround for this: either enable the "server" USE flag for tightvnc and re-emerge (this seems to pull in the missing font) or install the font manually:

Example command line:
$> USE='server' emerge -av tightvnc
or
$> emerge -av --oneshot font-misc-misc

In both cases: restart the X-server after emerging

Hope this helps until the ebuild is fixed (if that's the true source of the problem).

Bye
Christoph

This workaround saved my day. I access some Windows applications at my job when working from home. My home terminal is Gentoo and the work-from-remote setup involves SSH (for plain X applications) and Citrix (for the Windows applications, which have been unaccessible for a couple of days because of this issue).

Well, it's back to work then .. and thanks for the workaround!

Fixed, thanks.
