sci-libs/geos-2.2.1 (current stable in amd64) no longer builds with an aclocal error:

configure.in:80: error: AC_SUBST: `VERSION VERSION_MAJOR VERSION_MINOR VERSION_PATCH INTERFACE_CURRENT INTERFACE_REVISION INTERFACE_AGE JTS_PORT CAPI_VERSION CAPI_VERSION_MAJOR CAPI_VERSION_MINOR CAPI_VERSION_PATCH  API_INTERFACE_CURRENT CAPI_INTERFACE_REVISION CAPI_INTERFACE_AGE' is not a valid shell variable name

sci-libs/geos-3.1.0 does, however, build correctly and PostGIS doesn't have a problem with it (probably most commonly used with geos), and therefore should be considered for a push to stable.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge geos
Actual Results:  
stable (2.2.1) fails; adding via keywords/unmask 3.1.0 builds fine.

Expected Results:  
geos installs

Confirming both the build failure for v2.2.1, and that v3.1.0 seems to work -- both on amd64.
