Description Harris Landgarten 2009-06-27 19:38:40 UTC
after the update to the new pulseaudio, after login to gnome, X becomes unresponsive on my workstation after I try to close a window. I traced the problem to the Enable window and button sounds checkbox in sound preferences. If it is checked the problem starts. It it is disabled all works a normal.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.enable window and button sounds in sound preferences
2.open gnome-terminal
3.click to close gnome-terminal

Actual Results:
gnome terminal does not close and gnome becomes unresponsive until it is restarted

I have exactly the same issue - although it's taken me a long while to realise it is the "Enable window and button sounds" options that was causing (I have even tried emerge -ev gnome to no avail). Unticking the option in gnome and restarting gnome works around it.

Comment 2 Harris Landgarten 2009-06-29 20:52:04 UTC
that is why I labeled it critical. It took me a full day to blind alleys before I found the cause.
Comment 3 Nirbheek Chauhan (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-08 16:07:56 UTC
Could you test with libcanberra-0.14 which is in-tree now? (wait for a few hours and then sync)
Comment 4 Russell Knighton 2009-07-09 11:08:02 UTC
Tested here - compiles and installs fine.

Gnome no-longer locks-up all the time, but now I have new problems:

The pulse volume control applet doesn't seem to work - I can not adjust the volume using it. If I have video or music files playing, then do something in gnome that would produce a system sound, it locks up the video or music player program. Seems to all be linked still with the original pulse audio system sounds issues still.

Alright then, please open a new bug for this issue (let it go to bug-wranglers, this seems to be unrelated to gnome)
