It looks like the soname for icu changed between updates (at least for me (from libicuuc.so.40.0 to libicuuc.so.42.0)). I would suggest the revdep-rebuild warning be thrown in.

openoffice works ok for me after its rebuilt :-/ Are you sure openoffice has been recompiled succesfully?

I think my revdep-rebuild failed half way through when I ran it the first time. I mistakenly assumed it completed ok without checking the messages, based solely on the time it took. I can now confirm that after I unmerged and re-merged openoffice, it is working fine.
Remaining ARCHes might want to hold off until 269659 is resolved.
dev-libs/icu-4.2.1 will be stabilized in bug #281267.
