Description Grégoire Favre 2009-05-06 19:46:01 UTC
2.24.2-r1 is just fine, but I can't start the 2.26.1.
With a little google, it's not only a gentoo problem but seems to be present on other distro aswell.
A simple downgrade to 2.24.2-r1 fix it.
I have reinstalled gconf, started dbus, tried /usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 and /usr/libexec/gconfd-2 with no change at all, still got the :
gnome-terminal (from normal user and root) :
Failed to contact the GConf daemon; exiting.
Before a solution could be found I think it would be best to mask it.

Reproducible: Always

could you fill an upstream bug (unless there is already one) and paste the URL here ? I remember you told me you don't have a full gnome desktop so I'd like to know what is really missing to make this work out of the gnome desktop rather than mask it. After all it works for everyone else afaics.
Comment 2 Chris Slycord 2009-05-07 20:42:43 UTC
It fails for me too.

The only gnome package I've got installed is gnome-terminal (plus its dependencies).

Comment 3 Grégoire Favre 2009-05-07 20:51:04 UTC
Well, I emerged gnome, if that's not enough, could you tell me which packages are needed ?
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2009-April/msg00451.html has a patch to fix it.
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=570588
I hope it's enough, but if not I'll be happy to give more details :-)
Comment 4 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-05-07 21:47:15 UTC
great another failure from upstream who's postponed fixing to eventually 2.28. Did you test the patch from the mailing list, it seems this check was added to prevent some crashes.
Comment 5 Grégoire Favre 2009-05-07 22:08:25 UTC
Sorry I wasn't clear, yes with the patch it works for me.
Comment 6 José Romildo Malaquias 2009-05-10 14:40:44 UTC
I am experimenting this bug too, in ~amd64 with full gnome installed, but running another window manager (IceWM).
Comment 7 Chris Slycord 2009-05-11 14:57:10 UTC
I don't think that patch is the way to go.

As the comment noted, it can simply crash at some point if it doesn't contact the gconf daemon so having it remove the check just lets you wait to possibly crash at an unknown time.
Comment 8 glenn burns 2009-05-31 06:40:17 UTC
same issue with 2.26.2

Well, but the gconf_ping_daemon() func is marked as not to be used by apps in the gconf sources.
Actually, with that patch, g-t works. The only other way to have it working without patching was (for me) to launch another app using the gconf daemon (kazehakase worked for me) and only then launch g-t.
Anyway, AFAIK when an app needs a gconf daemon, this one is automatically launched and only die when no other client needs it. Then, I just don't understand the check.
Comment 10 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-07-22 10:36:30 UTC
I also think that would be better revert that until a proper fix is really found by upstream (or anybody else of course). What are the advantages of gnome-terminal-2.26 way of handling gconf failures over 2.24 way?
Comment 11 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-08-18 06:22:36 UTC
*** Bug 281849 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Comment 12 Nirbheek Chauhan (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-09-11 15:51:52 UTC
A partial fix for this has been backported from gnome-terminal 2.27.x[1] and added to 2.26.3-r2. As upstream has stated on the bug, they're not interested in a complete fix for now.
