Mhh, let me see if I can come up with a patch.
Created attachment 190344 [details, diff] Proposed patch aaand here it is. Vim guys what do ya think? If you don't have any concerns, I can propose it upstream.
Eh, wait. That patch breaks with ruby 1.8... Will update it tomorrow, sry :/
A patch was sent to the VIM mailing-list: http://groups.google.com/group/vim_dev/browse_frm/thread/eaa3732bef994034# I'll try and test it when I get home.

Created attachment 200031 [details, diff] Proposed patch from VIM ml I modified the patch to use configure.in and successfully built vim-7.2.238 from the tree with it.
Forgot to say that I built VIM using the patch with ruby-1.9.1_p129-r1 and the ruby USE flag, of course.

Created attachment 210427 [details, diff] Updated patch from VIM ml An updated patch was submitted some time ago to the VIM ml. This one patches both configure and configure.in
Forgot to mention the patch's source: http://groups.google.com/group/vim_dev/browse_frm/thread/699c65598bc6348b
I can confirm that with this patch I was able to compile app-editors/{,g}vim-7.2.303 with USE=ruby using dev-lang/ruby-1.9.1_p243. It is supposed to work just as well with ruby-1.8, but I can't test it.

Bram has accepted my patches within a week usually.
According to the vim-dev mailing list, vim-7.2.368 has ruby-1.9 support! The main patch comes in at 7.2.361[1], with a further runtime fix at 7.2.368[2]. I am going to wait a few days for this to settle out before I bump vim, but this will definitely be done soon. Okay, I think it's ready! Give [g]vim-7.2.376 a try, and it should build properly against ruby-1.9 (and 1.8 too, apparently).
if this is realy resolved and fixed, why the current ebuild (the vim.eclass for saying the truth) still requires =dev-lang/ruby-1.8* if the useflag ruby is enabled? is there some other relevant bug I wasn't able to find? thanks
