avrdude version 5.6 has been released. Simply creating a version-bumped ebuild in my overlay was sufficient to build / install / use the new avrdude. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Visit avrdude homepage. 2. Note new news article about 5.6 release. 3. Beg someone to add it to portage.
Is working here fine too with a version-bumped ebuild. Please supply an updated ebuild in portage.

version 5.6 is needed for stk600 starter kit support, that's why i'm hoping it will reach portage soon.

Could we get a bump soon? avrdude is a dependency for dev-embedded arduino, but avrdude-5.5 does not support Arduino Duemilanove boards.
