Description Maciej Mrozowski gentoo-dev 2009-03-25 06:46:38 UTC
In configure script, it searches in order:
-O3 availability in compiler - and appends when available
-O2 availability -||-
Comment 1 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-03-26 16:23:14 UTC
Please post your `emerge --info' and attach the config.log.
Comment 2 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-03-26 16:32:38 UTC
Hm, yes, confirmed: it does seem to "prefer" -O3, while leaving other compiler flags alone.

Comment 4 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-03-26 17:25:35 UTC
Thank you for report, Macie. Upstream still respect other CFLAGS they know nothing about:

 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.. -I. -DNDEBUG -Wall -O3 -Wno-non-virtual-dtor -pthread -DTHREADMODEL=POSIXTHREADS -pipe -march=athlon64 -mtune=athlon64 -msse3 -fomit-frame-pointer -ftracer -c GString.cpp  -fPIC -DPIC -o .libs/GString.o

-Wall -O3 -Wno-non-virtual-dtor - upstream suggested.
-pipe -march=athlon64 -mtune=athlon64 -msse3 -fomit-frame-pointer -ftracer - CFLAGS from /etc/make.conf.

So they do respect our CFLAGS but not all. I don't think I'm going to fix -O2/-O3 issue reported here. But I see that they require us to use --enable-debug switch to be able to pass debugging CFLAGS (-g*) and I'll fix this.
Comment 5 David Kredba 2009-07-27 18:39:05 UTC
Hello.

I like my CFLAGS to be absolutely respected by package(s).

In my opinion you can ignore upstream/author`s suggestion because we are Gentoo
doing things ourselves.

If it cannot be compiled or it will be not running with my (hopefully) safe CFLAGS (-O2 -pipe -g -ggdb) and NOSTRIP feature I`ll be one of the reporters to the upstream/authors.

Thank you.
Comment 6 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-02-01 07:27:24 UTC
Dropping all CFLAGS parsing code was easier... Fixed in 3.5.22-r1.
