Description steffen stramm 2009-03-06 03:35:19 UTC
this happens as some latex docs are being generated, so if you dont have a latexsuite installed, wont happen probably (texlive-core in my case). happens with the last stable and newest ~ version.

thx for the report, looks like a missing dep. Assigning to maintaining team.
Comment 2 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2009-03-06 06:43:00 UTC
no idea how to make tex not crap itself
Comment 3 Martin Väth 2009-03-06 15:43:41 UTC
/var/cache/fonts (and thus its subdirs) should be world writable with the
sticky bit set. If texlive does not set this as a default (I have not checked),
I would say this is a bug of texlive.

why?

its not the case anymore; ebuilds shall set VARTEXFONTS to $T/fonts

see bug #223077 and bug #221921

this is the vartexfonts stuff

> /usr/bin/texi2dvi: texinfo.tex appears to be broken, quitting.

for this e2fsprogs-libs may use a virtual/texi2dvi build dep.

Because this is the natural way to use the TeX systems: All users sharing
the same fonts. There may be exceptions for some special-purpose systems,
but these are, well, exceptions...

Since this bug is the wrong place for this discussion, I add my remark to
bug 221921.
Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2009-03-07 20:13:53 UTC
having every ebuild add a line "export VARTEXFONTS=$T/fonts" seems kind of wrong. isnt there an eclass or something for this ?

when I suggested that about one year ago there have been only voices against that idea [1], so no there is none.

Comment 8 Rick Harris 2009-03-21 10:26:38 UTC
So what's a poor user to do ?

Is the only current solution to installing this important package to uninstall latex, install e2fsprogs-libs, then re-install latex ?

I have the same problem but my error output is only slightly different to the original reporter as /var/cache/fonts/tfm/ directory already exists on my system prior to e2fsprogs-libs installation.

/var/cache/fonts/ and all it's subdirectories are also world writable with the
sticky bit set (this was mentioned in Comment #3, but was already the case).

Manually mkdir'ing /var/cache/fonts/tfm/unknown/ with the appropriate permissions (drwxrwxrwt) still doesn't do it.
Had to mkdir /var/cache/fonts/tfm/unknown/unknown/ with above permissions before e2fsprogs-libs would emerge on a system with latex installed.

I can confirm that. It is OK with sandbox-1.6-r2 but it doesn't work with the sandbox-1.7.
Comment 14 Colin DuPée 2009-04-03 17:40:52 UTC
Not that it's necessary, but since I fixed it before I found this thread, I'm going to add my /confirm as well; masking sandbox 1.7 gets you passed this.

does this fix things for people with tex errors ?

looks like we've been carrying an addwrite for a while in this ebuild

So is there nay fix? it's just awesome to find out those errors during a new install :'(

I hope this can be solved asap.

No, my tree is not out of date the only way i could emerge e2fsprogs was doing it from the installation stage3 and before emerge anything else. After that, i emerged --sync and emerged xorg etc and the error appeared. I sync my tree once a day so that's not the ase.

Please could you tell which poackage you think is out of date? what makes you think my portage is out of date? Thanks, and please remember y have an updated system.

it's still unrelated and you should stop posting to this bug
Comment 22 Jake Magee 2009-05-15 17:19:59 UTC
I have had the same issue. The solution I found was to emerge version 1.41.4 (which is still testing "~" at the moment).

Sonya, I suggest adding the following to /etc/portage/package.keywords:
  sys-fs/e2fsprogs ~x86
  sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs ~x86

Then try emerging the package again.

I think this can be marked as having a workaround provided, until 1.41.4 has been marked stable at which time the bug should be marked as fixed.
