Tried to emerge dev-python/matplotlib-0.98.5.2-r3 with +cairo +doc +fltk +gtk +latex +qt3 +qt4 +tk +wxwindows -examples -excel -traits and observed many interesting effects during documentation generation. There were quite a number of warnings with python backtraces, but this may be normal. An xv window appeared on my screen showing some graphic file from the working directory, and has not disappeared; I had to quit xv later by hand. Then latex started to process Matplotlib.tex, has not found some font, and called metafont. Here I got a sandbox violation: kpathsea: Running mktextfm ecrm1095 mktextfm: Running mf-nowin -progname=mf \mode:=ljfour; mag:=1; nonstopmode; input ecr m1095 This is METAFONT, Version 2.71828 (Web2C 7.5.5) kpathsea: Running mktexmf ecrm1095 ACCESS DENIED open_wr: /var/cache/fonts/source/jknappen/ec/mf29105.tmp /usr/bin/mktexmf: line 92: mf29105.tmp: Access denied This is a *very* common situation, see the bugs #221921 and #223077. After that, latex said ! I can't find file `ecrm1095'. <*> ...ljfour; mag:=1; nonstopmode; input ecrm1095 Please type another input file name ? and waited for my input. I pressed enter. After processing the whole file, pdftex wrote a few screens of messages like ! pdfTeX warning (dest): name{module-matplotlib.dates} has been referenced but does not exist, replaced by a fixed one (maybe, this is also, normal, don't know). Then I saw >>> Source compiled. --------------------------- ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY --------------------------- LOG FILE = "/var/log/sandbox/sandbox-28329.log" open_wr: /var/cache/fonts/source/jknappen/ec/mf29105.tmp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And at this point emerge hanged - nothing happened anymore. In another window, I did ps and saw 27732 pts/5 00:01:27 emerge 28329 pts/5 00:00:00 sandbox <defunct> 28900 pts/5 00:00:00 sh 28901 pts/5 00:00:00 xv (the last one is xv which showed something in a separate window). I had no choice other than press ctrl-c. Reproducible: Always

Should be fixed now in portage tree. Thanks.
Created attachment 183484 [details] emerge log Sorry, problems remain (see the log). There are a lot of error messages and warnings. Also: 1. There were a few LaTeX errors ! LaTeX Error: File `ucs.sty' not found. From what package does this style come? 2. An xv window appears and remains. It says that it shows the file temp/tmphwXIdM which is a 440x360 ppm file, truecolor (24 bit mode). I don't think this is right. It seems it's in pylab-examples. 3. The most crucial. After >>> Source compiled. emerge hangs. Nothing happens anymore, no disk activity, load = 0. ps says 19549 pts/5 00:00:00 su 19552 pts/5 00:00:00 bash 19636 pts/5 00:00:13 emerge 20080 pts/5 00:00:00 sandbox <defunct> 20634 pts/5 00:00:00 sh 20635 pts/5 00:00:00 xv

OK, I applied the patch to doc examples (which should have been a link) instead of regular examples, so the xv should not be a problem anymore. Also ucs.sty is pulled in the latex dependency on the doc flag, so I don't understand why you hit this problem. I also added graphviz dependency. Please test, and try to find out the error if you still encounter problems, I can't be much more help, I've tried a bunch of configs and they all worked.
OK, I've upgraded teTeX-3 -> TeXLive-2008, and now I have ucs.sty. xv window does not appear, and emerge completes successfully. Closing.
