Description Can Selcuk 2009-01-07 22:59:35 UTC
modifing the default window manager with gconf-editor by changing the desktop/gnome/session/required_component/windows_manager key with "compiz" will result to a " WARNING: Unable to find provider 'compiz' of required component 'windowmanager'" error on ~/.xsession-errors because the compiz.desktop is missing .This way gnome was starting without any windows decoration (even metacity)
by createatin the compiz.desktop file with the following fix the issue
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Compiz
Exec=compiz-manager
# name of loadable control center module
X-GNOME-WMSettingsModule=metacity
# name we put on the WM spec check window
X-GNOME-WMName=compiz
# back compat only
X-GnomeWMSettingsLibrary=compiz
# new gnome-session
X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=WindowManager
X-GNOME-Provides=windowmanager
NoDisplay=true

[Window Manager]
SessionManaged=false

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.changing the desktop/gnome/session/required_component/windows_manager key with "compiz"
2.restart gdm
3.

Actual Results:
gnome starts without any window decoration

Expected Results:
gnome with compiz as the default windows manager

gnome 2.24.r
compiz 0.7.8-r2

1) gnome-session 2.24 isn't in portage. Are you using the overlay?
2) if compiz doesn't provide a .desktop file, then it's a compiz bug... (If you're not sure, please choose the "Ebuild" component instead of assigning bugs directly, bug wranglers will forward the bug to the correct maintainers)
3) please provide your emerge --info

Thanks

I'll take a look at this bug later today.
Comment 4 Philip Allison 2009-01-15 11:32:36 UTC
I had the same problem, eventually figured out exactly what gnome-session considered a "provider" and how to create one, and manually created a .desktop file based on the one from metacity 2.24. The trouble I envisage is that there a multiple ways of starting Compiz - for example, with "ccp" or "gconf" as the default plugin, to load the rest of the configuration from the user's preferred configuration backend, or with a manually specified set of plugins - and only one command per desktop file.

If I had to pick one, I would choose "compiz --sm-disable ccp", as X session management isn't supported by gnome-session 2.24 (and would probably conflict if it was), and the CCP plugin allows full configuration via ccsm/simple-ccsm, including picking the backend for settings storage.

Custom .desktop file for specifying Compiz as a "windowmanager provider"
Comment 6 Serhij S. Stasyuk 2009-01-30 11:00:58 UTC
Same for me. I use the same compiz.desktop file, also created with the example of metacity.desktop. It would not hurt previous gnome-session or another SM, previous session uses .desktop packed with compiz. This has effect on both 0.6 and 0.7 versions of compiz in portage.

@gnome:

Does the attached desktop file seem ok to you? If so, we can install it with compiz.

Looks okay to me. Just FYI, gnome-session-2.26.0 has session-saving support, so the --sm-disable should be removed for that.
Comment 9 Jorge Manuel B. S. Vicetto (RETIRED) Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev 2009-04-26 11:47:56 UTC
Fixed on compiz-0.8.2-r1.
Thanks for the desktop file.
