Would like to start the process. I'm happy to CC arches, if someone gives the go ahead.

CCing arches.

Arches: Works good on x86/amd64 here, been using it for a long time, would like to finally stabilize.

Could overcame this bug using the following:
CXXFLAGS="-fPIC" emerge freeimage

I understand it's a dirty hack, but it works. In any way freeimage has
COMPILERFLAGS =  -fPIC -fexceptions -fvisibility=hidden
in it's Makefile so my hack is not worse than theirs, which does not work in the Wrapper subdir.

Makefiles.patch

fixes compilation on amd64 and user specified *FLAGS are now possible.

That just makes things worse, sorry.
