e2fsprogs-1.41.3 contains a few important bugfixes.

From the e2fsprogs website: "All users of e2fsprogs are urged to upgrade to the 1.41.3 version as soon as possible"

you're probably hitting Bug 217719 ... it isnt anything new.  i imagine 1.41.1 will fail the same way for you

Confirmed. amd64 stable. (tests pass outside the chroot)
