Starting a screen session in a vte based terminal does not have the backspace working. It's fine with xterm. What is backspace set to in your settings for gnome-terminal? Which TERM is set inside screen? It works fine here...
It's not gnome terminal (I don't have gnome installed):it's bare vte. TERM is set to "screen" in my screen session.
