Comment 2 Alexandre Rostovtsev (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-11-13 04:33:33 UTC
This seems to be happening because I had sys-devel/bison-2.4 installed (recently removed from portage for bugginess).

Downgrading to bison-2.3 and ONLY THEN upgrading to bison-2.4-r1 allows bison-2.4-r1 to build correctly.

I think a warning or die needs to be added to the bison-2.4-r1 ebuild to tell people to downgrade to bison-2.3 before trying to build to 2.4-r1

Masked >2.4, downgraded to 2.3, unmasked >2.4, tried upgrading to 2.4-r1 still produces same result as initial bugreport.

Will poke around more with this when I get home.

Confirmed, the following sequence achieved success for me:

# emerge -1 =sys-devel/bison-2.3
# emerge -1 sys-devel/bison

Now bison-2.4-r1 is installed.

Are you certain you actually downgraded to 2.3? If you masked >2.4 and remerged bison, you would get 2.4. You would want to mask >=2.4 or simply emerge 2.3 using an explicitly versioned package atom, as I showed above.

Uhm, yeah.. I wasn't really paying attention, so I probably missed that :P
Thanks for pointing it out.
Comment 6 Daniel Vergien 2008-11-13 12:53:27 UTC
For me the downgrade to bison 2.3 did not help. The error is exactly the same. I'm using gentoo-prefix on x86-solaris 10:

downgrading to bison-2.3 and then upgrading to 2.4-r1 does not work for me.

I installed 2.4-r1 when testing the patch while having 2.4 installed.
Comment 10 Stuart Shelton 2008-11-13 16:54:44 UTC
Same error occurs when trying to upgrade from bison-2.3 to bison-2.4-r1 on Mac OS 10.5 with Prefix Portage. bison-2.4 doesn't currently exist in this tree.

Is everyone having this issue using a prefix?
Comment 13 Alexandre Rostovtsev (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-11-13 17:31:00 UTC
(In reply to comment #12)
> Is everyone having this issue using a prefix?
No. I'm seeing this issue both on my normal ~amd64 desktop and in my 32-bit chroot (which I am guessing is not prefix either).
Comment 14 Dirk Heinrichs 2008-11-13 18:18:30 UTC
For me, downgrade method works (with paludis on ~x86, last sync was a few
minutes ago).
Comment 15 Gunnar Steiniger 2008-11-13 19:12:39 UTC
Had the same problem (~amd64), after commenting out MAKEOPTS in make.conf it works for me.
Comment 16 Stuart Shelton 2008-11-13 19:34:22 UTC
Actually, a different Mac OS/prefix machine has just built bison successfully, so I suspect gremlins in the first one I tried - Mac/prefix builds do seem to work after all.
Comment 17 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-11-13 19:40:10 UTC
Looks like a parallel make problem, because in the first build log, src/Makefile wants to run tests/bison which points right back to src/bison, which hasn't yet been built. Sometimes it happens to build bison before the executable is run, and sometimes it doesn't. Attaching a patch shortly which gets ../tests/bison out of the loop (the configure script does a fine job of finding out where bison is).

Neither this one nor downgrading to 2.3 before emerging 2.4-r1 works on my PC.

This patch would cause the testsuite to be run with the currently installed bison, not the bison being installed.
Comment 23 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-11-13 22:34:31 UTC
i need a config.log from someone.
Comment 24 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-11-13 22:37:12 UTC
It seems the tests aren't run from the src/Makefile and the patch fixes only that Makefile:

Making check in src
make[2]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/bison-2.4-r1/work/bison-2.4/src'
make check-am
make[3]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/bison-2.4-r1/work/bison-2.4/src'
make[3]: Nothing to be done for `check-am'.
make[3]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/bison-2.4-r1/work/bison-2.4/src'
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/bison-2.4-r1/work/bison-2.4/src'
Comment 25 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-11-13 23:10:04 UTC
to reproduce this bug:

ebuild $(path)/bison-2.4-r1.ebuild compile
cd $(workdir)/src
rm bison
touch parse-gram.y
make

Comment 26 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-11-13 23:15:14 UTC
if the patch were modified to only touch parse-gram.c and parse-gram.h it should fix this.

Created attachment 171670 [details, diff]
bison-2.4.0-compat.patch

can someone suffering from this problem replace the compat patch with this one and try it out?

ie. replace /usr/portage/sys-devel/bison/files/bison-2.4.0-compat.patch with this one
run ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/bison/bison-2.4-r1.ebuild digest
emerge bison

Don't use ../tests/bison -y but use @YACC@

This doesn't really work as intended.

Yes, I can reproduce.

Yay, that patch worked fine. Thank you very much Ryan.

I can also confirm that it works for me also with this patch.
