The named.conf file for bind 9.2.2-r2 (named.conf-r2) has the wrong path for the
named.pid file. It has this line:

pid-file "/var/run/named.pid";

when it should have this line:

pid-file "/var/run/named/named.pid";

Without this change, named refuse to start (since it doesn't have write
permissions in /var/run).  Note that the init.d/named script has the proper path
set, so making this change will also bring the config file into agreement with
the rc script.
