could you try media-gfx/blender-2.48-r1 (which will require an unstable sys-apps/portage)?
media-gfx/blender-2.48-r1 uses EAPI=0 now, so it should be useable without latest portage installed. please resync in a few hours and emerge this version. (and reopen this bug if it is should still be a problem)
