inkscape-0.46 does a terrible job of reading in gnuplot's svg output.  It doesn't actually show plots.  This behaviour is well described in the bugs below.

There are patches upstream, TWO at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/214171
and one more in:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/174720

I've rebuilt inkscape from 0.46-r2 adding these three patches.  They apply cleanly and solve the problem.

Sorry, I got those backwards - two small patches in the second bug, one patch in the first.

media-gfx/inkscape-0.46-r4 is a stable candidate (in 30 days).
