It builds fine on sparc.  Now, do you have anything to test it with?

First you'll need soundfonts, pick a site from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundfont#Free_SoundFont_downloads

Then, honestly, I never really played with the cli, I always used qsynth,
fluidsynth-dssi or vlc.

With vlc (0.9) you'll be able to play midi files.
With e.g. qsynth, it'll give you an alsa sequencer client (which should be the
cli behavior). Then you'll need another client that'll feed it with midi
events, vkeybd is one but unfortunately tcl/tk is broken in ~arch; otherwise
you can try e.g. rosegarden and load a midi file.
Perhaps you'll have to plug a few things (qjackctl or patchage can do it
nicely) to have the midi connection set up.
